Writer and scholar Ralph Ellison is born. He is best known for his renowned, award-winning 1952 novel Invisible Man, a seminal work on marginalization from an African American protagonist’s perspective. Ellison chronicled the “Invisible Man” as educated and self-aware, with a broad intellectual curiosity; invisible, but not insubstantial. Ellison’s unfinished novel Juneteenth was published posthumously in 1999. Learn more.
